Flipping

  • What tools did you choose and why?
  • Flipgrid and Adope Spark. Selected as they seemed the most pertinent and applicable to me in my role as an administrator, they were free, and were not exclusive to Apple.
  • What worked and what didn’t? I have not had the opportunity to employ them yet
  • How did you apply the tools to your practice? I haven't yet. That said, I have found a helpful site in Flipping Professional Development that I plan to explore, click here
  • What are barriers to your use, or student use? (Refer to your experience and articles discussed in class)
A barrier to me is utility. I am working to learn these new tools from both a utility and significance standpoint, but have limited interaction with them given my role. In my experience and having read the articles, I do recognize the benefit and potential, but on some level see it as just (not meant to trivialize as it is better than others) another form of homework, a realm that is completely different in supports, structures, demands, etc. for every child. I am more of a proponent of doing everything we can from bell to bell as the further the tentacles of our reach, the less we have control. Ideally, hypothetical little Jimmy would go home after school, eat a snack, mediate for about 10 minutes, maybe do some pilates, center himself, interact with a video , take quizzes, stop an reflect, maybe take a drink of water, eat a nutritious dinner with mom and dad while watching Jeopardy (the only TV show for the evening), and then take a shower and get 8-9 hours of sleep before eating a bowl of non-GMO, whole grain cereal for breakfast - this of course is all sans iPad, iPhone, X-Box 360, SnapChat, and YouTube. We know this is not the case, yet we frame home learning as if it is.
  • How can video be used as an assessment tool? (Refer to your experience and articles discussed in class)
As presented in the articles, there must be a level of interaction involved in watching videos. This is both an accountability measure as well as an attention span matter. We learned at some point in this or another class that we are working with students who are accustomed to 8 second sound bites, making anything longer than a minute seem like an eternity. If comprehension checks for accuracy and critical thinking are embedded, it becomes an assessment.

I can't see how you do it being an Administrator with a full plate at work, taking a Master program and having a newborn. Thumbs up! Not being tech savvy myself, I am too learning how to use these new tools. Like you said, using these tools as a utility and making it a significant standpoint for my students. I wonder if you observe your P.E. department and what tools they found that are useful in their lesson plans?

I feel that flipping can be powerful for some (independent learners), but not for all. There are still many students that don't have internet access at home and don't own computers or tablets. In elementary school it would have to be used in the classroom, not necessarily as something that they would have to view before coming to class. We would have to set some time aside in class.
